"Our Own Voices"
Hannah Rose Nicholas (Philadelphia) and Annaliese Kowert (Miami) lead a concert of music and poetry inspired by the visceral and folk-minded String Quartet no.4 by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok, and Strum by violinist and composer Jessie Montgomery.
Related musical works include three newly commissioned pieces, for strings, vocals, and clarinet, by composers Abby Swidler, Daniel Pencer, and Borey Shin, that are based on poetry by children from Miami public schools.
The final commission is by Miami composer and Frost School of Music Professor Shawn Crouch, working with text by Miami poet Annik Adey-Babinksi. The piece is entitled: "O Miami, With Love."
The performers include: Hannah, Annaliese, Abby, Daniel, Alexa Ciciretti, and Maya Cohon. They have performed classical, jazz, original and world music with one another in Miami, Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. "Our Own Voices" is their first performance all together.
The concert is set in the Nina Johnson Gallery amid works by Derek Fordjour and is free and open to the public.
Doors open at 7:30; performance is at 8pm.
