The Latin-American diaspora has become known for expressing the raw intensity of despecho, or heartbreak, through emotive lyrics and rhythms.

Karaoke del Despecho is a karaoke pop-up that dares Miamians to grab the mic and belt out their favorite canciones de despecho while putting pen to paper and transforming their big feelings into poetry.

Jeilin Espinel is a Venezuelan visual artist based in Miami. Her work explores migration, memory, and identity through a blend of photography, film, and writing. Jeilin’s directorial work has been presented at festivals in Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United States. Most recently, she received a Development Fund from Miami’s Knight Foundation and presented her latest book, “Hace días que duermo con el pasaporte al borde de la cama,” at Books & Books and Exile Books, as well as in New York at Printed Matter’s Art Book Fair.
