Jai Alai Magazine

2011 - 2021

Jai-Alai Magazine published poetry, fiction, essays, and black & white drawings. The magazine began in 2011 with Issue #10 and ended with Issue #1 in 2021.

Jai-Alai's series of interlinking covers were designed by Inah Mercedes, Jenni Perri, and Juliana Urrego, with the loss of a bar each issue reflecting the magazine's process of planned disappearance.

Issues #10 - 2 were assembled through a combination of solicitation and physical submissions. Jai Alai kept two original, artist-made submission boxes at Books & Books Coral Gables (Made by Gavin Perry) and at Sweat Records in Little Haiti (Made by Autumn Casey). Having open submissions available only to those who were physically inside Miami was designed to enforce a locality to the magazine.

For Issue #1, Caroline Cabrera collected a group of poets who wrote poems "after" poems by students in O, Miami's education program. To reflect this change in structure, as well as the fact that the issue arrived after a five year gap, Topos Graphics reimagined the cover while still retaining the system.

Issue #10 - 8 editor: P. Scott Cunningham
Issues #7 - 2 editor: J.V. Portela
Issue #1 editor: Caroline Cabrera
