The University of Miami Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) houses a broad collection of limited edition artists’ books from the Ediciones Vigía cooperative based in Matanzas, Cuba. These books, renowned for their dazzling use of color, found materials, and compelling text are representative of hand-made and unique art and are often inspirational pieces.

The CHC hosts a half-day workshop led by Rolando Estévez, co-founder of Ediciones Vigía and master book artist who teaches participants how to create their own artist book using the collection as inspiration. Participants can choose to have their work archived at the CHC as part of the O, Miami – CHC collaboration.

We seek to bring together poets and writers with the power of the handmade movement to make both rare books and manuscript collections into interactive spaces where learning and research take physical form. This event lives at the intersection of a makers’ space and an archival collection, seeking to answer the question: how can an archival collection feed a city’s creative spirit?
