O, ysters: Taste & Ode

We joined Oyster Specialist Shley Suarez-Burgos for an oyster tasting and ode with The Lazy Oyster at Gramps Getaway. Guests learned about the local history, ecology, biology, and conservation efforts of oysters while being guided through proper oyster-eating using mindfulness and sommelier techniques. In addition to the tasting experience, there was a poetry workshop portion facilitated by Nicole Combeau.

O, ysters: Taste & Ode explored how to best pair oysters through taste and poetry. Participants tasted three varieties of oysters, with an optional beverage pairing, and received a laminated tasting wheel and a tasting guidebook.

The event was located inside the Mangrove Room at Gramps Getaway.

Shley Suarez-Burgos is a chonga perdidad in the waves of Biscayne Bay. She combines her skills in traditional papermaking, filming, yoga teaching, oyster sommelier-ing, and fishing to create unique and meaningful events for historically underrepresented communities, both locally and nationally. Shley is the Program Coordinator for Latino Outdoors Miami, a Level 1 Oyster Specialist with the Oyster Master Guild, and a Board Member of the North American Marine Alliance. She is also the Residency Papermaker at Miami Paper and Printmaking Studios (IS Projects) and a lover of the Miami Trinity (Uncle Luke, Trick Daddy, and Trina).
