Nick reads from his prize-winning manuscript, selected by National Book Award-winner Robin Coste Lewis and published by Jai-Alai Books. Nick's residency in Miami is generously donated by The Writer's Room at The Betsy-South Beach.

The reading takes place in The Conservatory in The Betsy's Art Deco Wing.

After the reading, immerse yourself in the photography of Atlanta's Christopher Barker.

Homegoing: A Conceptual Photo Series is a photographic exhibition inspired by the cultural and literary works of pioneering black queer poets and writers of the late 20th century. Chris Barker (Art Director) and Atlanta-based photographer, Vegas Giovanni, have paired contemporary photographic images and motion typography with excerpts from the verses of Essex Hemphill, Langston Hughes, Richard Bruce Nugent, Joseph Beam, and Marlon Riggs in a visual celebration of black queer expression.

A Cave Canem fellow, Nick Makoha is the author of Kingdom of Gravity, winner of the 2015 Brunel International African Poetry Prize, forthcoming from Peepal Tree Press. His work has appeared in The Poetry Review, Rialto, TriQuarterly, the Boston Review and elsewhere. His one-man show My Father & Other Superheroes debuted to sold-out audiences at the 2013 London Literature Festival and is currently on tour. Find him at nickmakoha.com.
