Who, [Girl], Your [Man]? - a modern day Keh Mukarni zine release party and live reading.

Historically, Keh Mukarni (translation: “Say” and “Deny”) is a genre of folk poetry in Hindavi literature. The genre dates back to the 11th century and is credited to poet Amīr Khusrau, an iconic figure in the cultural history of medieval India. It is made up of playful and sensual riddles involving two speakers seemingly discussing their lovers but ending instead in wordplay. Though it is centuries old, Keh Mukarni has a present day feel to it, focusing strongly on sex positivity and the feminine. While Keh Mukarni is traditionally performed between two female characters, “Who, [Girl], Your [Man]?” puts the pronouns in brackets to allow for inclusivity across the gender spectrum.

After a two month long call for submissions, we’ve chosen 10 local Keh Mukarni poems and compiled them into a zine which will be released at the event. Selected poets will share their poems on stage. Those in attendance are invited to write their own Keh Mukarni poems on the spot and share them as well!

The reading will be followed by a dance party just as sensual and playful as the poems themselves.
