Kayak Poetry Workshop

April 15, 2015, 9:30am

Morningside Park, Miami

In this poetry & kayaking workshop, award-winning poet Michael Hettich leads a brief journey into Biscayne bBy, concentrating on the rhythms of our own bodies as they glide across the rhythms of the water, watching for wildlife of all kinds, and sharing these moments with each other.

Participants beach their boats on one of the slag islands to write some poems there, as quickly as possible, trying to get the immediate impressions down on the page. Then we share what we’ve written and maybe even make a collective (group) poem.

Participants should bring a poem they or someone else has written, paper and pen to write something new, a plastic bag to keep things dry, and appropriate clothing. Little or no previous kayaking experience required. The point of the journey is to have fun and to share a few glimpses into one of the hearts of poetry.

Meet at Morningside Park at 9:30 a.m. to check in and get your gear, then head out on the water. After the workshop concludes, the group will paddle back to the point of disembarkation.

The workshop is free, but kayak rental is up to the participant. If you have your own kayak, you are welcome to bring it. Otherwise, Morningside Park has single and double kayaks for rent beginning at $12/hour.
